En Kato has an interesting story. It started when I was a child. Every
February 5th, Los Reyes Magos come to
town to deliver gifts for the children. It’s a great day, I remember how my
brother used to wake me up to open the presents, and it was such an exciting
and happy morning. Maybe that's why my brother came with the idea of becoming a
Rey Mago and deliver toys to the poor children of our community.
We
gather some friends and disguise ourselves as Reyes Vagos. Imagine me with a
fake beard and moustache; I look like a tiny gay Rey Mago. It was very funny.
So we
buy some toys and candies and go downtown. It starts with some poor kids on a
dirty corner; we approach them and give them some toys; little cups and tiny
animals. At first they look at us with an untrusted stare, but when we tell
them the toys are for free, their expressions change completely, we can see the
same excitement we felt when my brother and I were kids. Happy faces.
Es La historia de Kato es muy interesanste. Cada 05 de
febrero, Los Reyes Magos llegan a la ciudad para entregar los regalos a los
niños. Es un gran día, recuerdo cómo mi hermano solía despertarme a abrir los
regalos, era una mañana emocionante y feliz. Tal vez por eso a mi hermano se le
ocurrió la idea de convertirse en un Rey Mago y entregar juguetes a los niños
pobres de nuestra comunidad.
Nos reunimos
algunos amigos y nos disfrazamos como Reyes Vagos. Imagínenme con una barba
falsa y bigote; Me veo como un pequeño gay Rey Mago. Era muy divertido.
Así que
compramos algunos juguetes y dulces y nos vamos al centro. Empezamos con
algunos niños pobres en una esquina sucia; nos acercamos a ellos y les damos
algunos juguetes; pequeñas tazas y animales pequeños. Al principio nos miran
con una mirada de desconfianza, pero cuando les decimos que los juguetes son
gratis, sus expresiones cambian por completo, podemos ver el mismo entusiasmo
que sentimos cuando mi hermano y yo éramos niños. Caras felices.
En So we
continue our delivery mission. As we deliver toys we notice that the voice was
spreading out. The Reyes Magos are in town with a little gay one. And kids
start to come out from every corner. I can’t believe how many poor children can
live within a few blocks. It is heart breaking, so many of them appearing
suddenly like if they were hiding under the rocks. Some of their parents are
there, they look at us with appreciation and thank us; I know they would give
them the toys if they could but the streets don't allow for such luxuries.
So we
try to go every year, knowing it's not enough but at least is something. Now I
want to make toys available for every one of those kids. The idea I have is to
encourage people to knit a Push toy and to leave it on the streets so someone
else may find it and hopefully play with it.

Es Así que
continuamos nuestra misión. A medida que entregamos juguetes nos damos cuenta
de que la voz se estaba extendiendo. El Reyes Magos están en la ciudad con un
pequeño gay. Y los niños comienzan a salir de todos los rincones. No puedo
creer cómo tantos niños pobres pueden vivir dentro de unas pocas cuadras. Se te
rompe el corazón, aparecen de repente como si se escondiesen debajo de las
rocas. Algunos de sus padres están ahí, nos miran con aprecio y nos dan las
gracias; sé que ellos les darían juguetes si pudieran, pero las calles no
permiten tales lujos.
Tratamos de
ir todos los años, sabiendo que no es suficiente, pero al menos es algo. Ahora
quiero hacer juguetes disponibles para cada uno de esos niños. La idea que
tengo es animar a la gente a tejer un juguete tejido y dejarlo en las calles
para que alguien más pueda encontrarlo y tal vez jugar con él.

Puedes empezar cuando quieras, tejer en algún momento libre y solo salir y regalárselo a algún niñ@ que veas en tu camino, o dejarlo en algún lugar visible donde no se maltrate demasiado con una nota (ej. Llévame contigo).
